ANKARA — Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmus stated that the work to be carried out within the Parliament will be based solely on “recommendations and findings”.
Speaking at a ceremony in Samsun, Kurtulmus described the commission established under the Parliament within the scope of the Peace and Democratic Society Process as limited to “recommendations and findings.” He claimed the process was initiated to evaluate the new situation following the PKK’s decision to disband. “This process is by no means a negotiation process,” he said.
ECONOMIC COST OF THE CONFLICT
Kurtulmus highlighted the severe economic and social toll Turkey has endured in its over 50 year struggle against the PKK, estimating material losses close to 3 trillion dollars. He said: “Tens of thousands of our children have become martyrs”. Kurtulmus stressed the need to rebuild unity during this period.
