WAN – Seyfettin Demhat, an ill prisoner whose medications brought from abroad have not been provided, has been transferred from Van High Security Prison to Kırşehir Type-S Prison against his will. His wife, Tuba Demhat, has called for his immediate release.

 

Demhat, imprisoned since 2016 with a 26-year sentence, suffers from Familial Mediterranean Fever and several other health conditions. Despite the critical need for his medications, which are imported from abroad, he has not been given his medicines recently. Furthermore, he was transferred to a different prison where similar shortages are feared.

 

His family says that while the Van prison administration previously ensured the supply of his medicines, this is no longer the case. Tuba Demhat said that her husband has been moved multiple times against his wishes over the past decade. She expressed concern over how he can access his medication now, adding that prison officials admitted they cannot handle medications imported from foreign countries.

 

"My husband is in a critical condition, and prisons are unable to care for him properly," she said, demanding his release for medical treatment.

 

Tuba Demhat stressed the urgent need for the release of ill prisoners, saying, "If democracy is to be established properly, this situation must change. Prisoner families are suffering, and regulations must be enacted immediately." She warned that the state will be held responsible if her husband’s health deteriorates due to lack of medication.

 

She added that she has been unable to visit her husband in the new prison and fears for his life if the medicine supply is not ensured. While supporting justice, she expressed distrust in the state and called for an action.
