Tree slaughter continues as governorate says 'stopped' 2025-08-13 09:48:20   ŞIRNEX - The tree slaughter, which the Şırnak Governorate said "we have stopped" in the Besta region, continues.    In Cudî, Gabar, Cilênimêja, Besta, Qaşûran and Komate regions of Şirnex (Şırnak), tree slaughter has been continuing for the last 5 years under the supervision of soldiers and village guards. In the images taken at the Redê Gewr point of Besta, located between Şirnex and Sêrt (Siirt), trees cut down in a large area are seen.    According to the information obtained from local sources, tree felling continues at many points such as Cinîwer, Rîsor, Girêsêvê, Çemê Mezin, Kaniya Mîr. The cut trees are transported from mountainous areas to the asphalt road with tractors and then loaded onto trucks and taken to different cities. The sheepherders in the region cannot find and area to graze their animals due to the drought caused by the deforestation.    'STOPPED' CLAIM FROM THE GOVERNORSHIP   Şırnak Governorate had claimed that the tree slaughter in the region had been stopped in a meeting with civil society organisations. However, the footage shows that the slaughter continues. In the footage taken in the Redê Gewr region, it is seen that a wooded area has been destroyed and completely barren.    It is also noteworthy that the sheepherders are trying to graze their herds of goats in the barren areas. This situation threatens all life in the region.    MA / Zeynep Durgut
